The Pelican Hotel

  Miami Beach's King of Kitsch

by Joseph Brown

South Beach hotels come in all shapes and sizes. Some are huge and majestic, like the Fontainebleau. Some are small and sensual like the Savoy. And then there's the Pelican. It's not the largest hotel on the strip, nor is it the most glamorous, but it is, without a doubt the most unique hotel you'll find in Miami Beach.

The Pelican is the brainchild of Diesel Jeans owner Renzo Rosso who purchased the dilapidated, circa-1948 hotel in the early 90s when the European fashionista invasion of South Beach was in full swing.

Each of the Pelican's 30 rooms is designed on a different theme with its own personality ("Halfway to Hollywood," "Me Tarzan, You Vain"). Designer Magnus Ehrland spent seven months scouring garage sales, flea markets and antique stores all over Florida to find the right assortment of one-of-a-kind furnishings. Ehrland's kitschy furnishings produce a unique statement that some how fits perfectly into the swirl of South Beach.

The Pelican's Penthouse occupies the entire top floor of the hotel, with 3 bedrooms, 2.5 bathrooms, and features outstanding technology for meetings, receptions, and photo-shoots. Eclectic furnishings inside include 1960's Schultz chairs, a top-of-the-line industrial kitchen and granite with stainless steel appliances. The large fully equipped living room has a 50-inch flat screen TV, internet broadband access, and state of the art stereo equipment. A six-foot round tropical fish tank embedded in a $17,000 copper wall overlooks the grand living room and incredible ocean view. The Pelican's Penthouse was once rated 'suite of the Year' by German Vogue magazine.

A mint green mosaic master bathroom and Jacuzzi tub equipped with TV monitor, separate oversized multi-head steam showers, marble floors, his and hers wash sinks, sound system, round-out the Pelican's amenities. Also part of the Penthouse are two spacious terraces, one of which overlooks the ocean and is equipped with a eight person Jacuzzi tub surrounded with lush tropical plants.

The Pelican Café has both indoor and outdoor seating and serves breakfast, lunch and dinner every day of the week. Breakfast on the terrace, is popular with tourists and locals alike.

For visits to the beach located across the park from the hotel, the Pelican offers complimentary beach chairs, umbrellas and beach towels. Wireless Internet is available throughout the property, and 'On Command' Movies & Music are available in each room.

The Pelican hotel is located right in the heart of South Beach's Ocean Drive, with Lummus Park and the Atlantic just across the street. Lincoln Road shopping is eight blocks north, and the Miami Beach Convention Center is one block further. If you're looking for something different during your stay in South Beach, the Pelican hotel certainly fills the bill.
