Greystone Hotel in Miami Beach Comes Back to Life
The Greystone Hotel at 1920 Collins Avenue is one of the most important examples of art deco architecture within the City of Miami Beach. Even though the hotel fell into disrepair and was shuttered for nearly seven years, a plan for a fresh new overhaul including a completely new floor plan has passed review by the Historic Preservation Board. HPB review, along with Design Review Board approval are two major milestones which all Miami Beach buildings must complete on their way to a new lease on life.
The new upscale design will feature only 19 suites, some with 2-story layouts that provide access to a private rooftop garden and sundeck from atriums via private spiral staircases within each unit.
While the hotel lobby will be restored to its original condition, most of the ground floor will be dedicated to an upscale restaurant operated by One Group, which also operates hotels in London and restaurants such as STK in New York and One Sunset in West Hollywood.
The Greystone’s northside windows facing 20th Street will be extended downward to ground-level giving a dramatic lighting effect into the restaurant and enhancing the streetscape for pedestrians. The level below the main floor will be excavated to provide space for a new upscale lounge.
Even though the Greystone hotel’s façade was heavily modified years ago by placing a storefront in the northeast corner of the building, historic preservationists and art deco aficionados will be happy to know that this modification is scheduled to be removed and the building will be restored to its original pristine condition.
Hat’s-off to architect Allan Shulman for what appears to be a gorgeous new design for a grand Miami Beach hotel.
