Philippe Hits the G-Spot! | On Our Radar
Scene-makers love a new restaurant. All that cool, glittering cutlery and those crisply-printed menus make excellent fodder for cocktail party chat about, “…oh my, you mean you HAVEN’T eaten at (insert name here) yet?!”
We’re sounding the starting bell for the newest South Beach hotspot in the still-unfinished Gansevoort Hotel. Philippe Chow presents PHILIPPE to the pantheon of soon-to-be-red-hot Miami Beach restaurants.
Born in Hong Kong in 1958, the chef moved to China at 16 and New York City at 20, honing his culinary skills at the famous Mr. Chow for 25 years.
The Gansevoort Hotel is the new kid on the block (in the erstwhile Roney Plaza space) which now sports a 50-foot shark tank, an infinity pool, a rooftop “adults only” pool deck and 334 mod-looking rooms. Its STK steakhouse will be next on our restaurant radar this fall.
David Barton designed the huge new hotel gym and to guarantee more carb-filled customers, Philippe Restaurant features it’s own noodle master! Chef Wai Ming Cheng will provide a culinary floor show of freshly-prepared noodles he stretches and tosses about to the delight of diners peering into the theatrically-designed open kitchen.
A sea of minimalist crisp whiteness with shining black floors, the 400-seat space offers a gourmet Chinese menu with Peking Duck, Spicy Prawns and Satays of Chicken and Beef. While not an exact copy of Chow’s New York outpost, the Miami restaurant does offer an elevated chef’s table where diners can oversee the preparation of their meals.
To avoid being crushed in the stampede for the best tables, we suggest you call the Ganesvoort now and get on a first-name basis with the hostess.
Philippe at the Gansevoort South, 2305 Collins Avenue, 305-674-0250.
