It’s High Season in the city with the best weather, the hottest bodies and the coolest parties…

Have a Wonderful Weekend!

Saturday February 27

Brunch

Eleventh Street Diner
1065 Washington Avenue
Serving breakfast 24 hours a day attracts a diverse crowd to this transplanted chrome-covered Jersey club car so be prepared for pancakes with a side of last night’s club kids. For an “only in South Beach” kind of morning, start your day at the Eleventh Street Diner.

Afternoon Action

Knight Concert Hall

Sunday February 28

Brunch

Hakkasan
4441 Collins Avenue
Traditional dim sum brunches served in Chinatown teahouses across the globe feature tiny dumplings filled with fish or meat that are steamed or fried and presented in little baskets for hungry diners to spear with their chopsticks. Miami has a few inexpensive spots where locals go to experience this unique weekend meal but none come close to the pristine perfection of Hakkasan’s rather pricey brunch service. If you haven’t experienced the Fontainebleau’s luxe new gourmet Asian dining room yet, a lunchtime visit is definitely easier on the wallet than a full dinner feast.

Afternoon Action

American Airlines Arena
601 Biscayne Boulevard
Basketball fans may have missed the high flying antics of the slam dunk competition at last week’s All Star Games but the Harlem Globetrotters will bring all of that goofy ball-spinning fun to life at the AAA this afternoon at 4pm. Playing an exhibition match against the Washington Generals, the Globetrotters promise to show the Miami Heat how to fill the stands with simple, old-fashioned fun. Sweet Georgia Brown!

Cocktails

Jimbo’s
4201 Rickenbacker Causeway
If you can find the rustic bait shack behind the water treatment plant at Virginia Key, you’re welcome to grab a few cold ones from the cooler and try your luck at Bocce Ball while the rest of the world fades into the deep background.

Dinner

Lido at the Standard
40 Island Avenue
Chef Mark Zeitouni tries to keep things healthy at his lovely bayside dining room at the Standard Spa but that should not sway your selection of fresh local seafood simply kissed by the grill and served at one of the most peaceful eateries in this or any other town. Perfect for a quiet Sunday night, the Standard attracts a great looking crowd of suntanned regulars to the west side of the city.

Nightlife

LIV
4441 Collins Avenue
Celebrate a bangin’ birthday tonight with Birdman Bryan “Baby” Williams at a special party featuring the sounds of DJ Don P and Stevie J. The founder of Cash Money Records and Lil Wayne’s best buddy, Birdman brings the full Mardi Gras party scene to the Fontainebleau tonight!

To be certain your wedding day is a sweet success, contact Carolina Montoya and her husband Fernando Puga at Designer’s Cake for a custom confection that is as unique as you are! Wedding celebrations are a once in a lifetime expression of your love and a reflection of your passionate personal commitment. These exquisite one-of-a-kind designs will capture the distinct sentiment of your special day unlike anything you’ve ever seen (check photo at left). From complex layered structures to a groom’s cake that replicates his Vuitton briefcase, no idea is too extreme for the Designer’s Cake team.

Inspired by their background in architecture, Carolina and Fernando approach each project with the same precision and attention to detail required in the creation of the tiny scale models used in building design. While most wedding cake companies have you pick a prefabricated model out of a catalog, a Designer’s Cake emerges from your ideas and inspirations. The designers talk to you about your feelings, favorite colors and have you share photos of the things you love. Taking inspiration from your personal reflections, they prepare detailed sketches so you can be certain your wedding cake is exactly right for your most important day. If you can dream it, they can bake it!

A Designer’s Cake can be traditional, exotic, tiered or topsy-turvy. If you decide to venture away from chocolate or vanilla, the designers will work with you to select a custom flavor from red velvet to pumpkin or a nut and fruit-filled recipe from Colombia that will dazzle your guests with it’s unique and sensual texture. Frostings and fillings can be cream or coconut, caramel or marshmallow and to top it all off, a perfectly smooth layer of fondant finishes your cake off flawlessly.

Weddings can be simple or simply outrageous but should always reflect your own sense of style.

We’ve been contacted by several South Beach visitors who leveled some very serious charges against an Ocean Drive restaurant — one that is notorious for its bad customer reviews.

Apparently when these patrons complained about elevated charges on their bill, the restaurant gave them a round of free drinks to defuse the situation. The kicker is that the drinks, according to these two individuals, were laced with Rohypnol, the “date-rape” drug, presumably so the customers wouldn’t remember the details of the over-charging incident.

Over the years we’ve had many instances where people made wild allegations against South Beach businesses after mis-understandings concerning pricing and service matters, however, this one stands out due to the fact that one of the individuals making the allegation is a physician from the University of Florida’s College of Medicine. The doctor told us he is “very familiar with the effects of Rohypnol,” which in their case was “generalized weakness and amnesia” and “sever dizziness and vomiting.”

Additionally, we found one other report on the Internet that, while written in broken English, made the same drugging charge against the very same restaurant.

We also checked to see if a blatantly illegal act such as this would even be cost-effective for a restaurant to pursue, and it turns out that Rohypnol can be purchased in quantity for under $2 per tablet. Spending $2 in order to add $60 to a customer’s bill would provide a handy return on investment for a restaurant willing to take such a risk.

The physician filed reports with both the Miami Beach Police and the FBI concerning this incident, and according to the physician, “the police took it lightly but the FBI are serious about getting into the bottom of it cause other people from chicago and other states had the same problem with that place.”

We are withholding the name of the restaurant until the investigation is made public, however anyone having information dealing with such occurrences should contact the Miami branch of the FBI at:

Phone: (305) 944-9101
Fax: (305) 787-6538
E-mail: Miami@ic.fbi.gov

You may also submit your information through the FBI’s “Tips and Public Leads” form at: https://tips.fbi.gov/

In the mean time we strongly urge Miami Beach visitors to read the posted reviews of any restaurant you plan on visiting.
