MiamiVue | Marlin Hotel Miami Beach

marlin2.jpgThe Marlin Hotel at 12th & Collins Avenue in Miami Beach is a prime example of Streamline Moderne design, and displays this wave pattern around its roof-line. At one time this combination was referred to as “Style Moderne,” but that phrase now seems to have faded from use.

The Marlin was built in 1939 and designed by L. Murray Dixon who also designed the Victor, Ritz Plaza, Senator, Tides and Raleigh hotels among others.

After being shut-down in the 1980s, the Marlin, along with the Tides, Palmer House and Kent hotels were taken over by Island Records owner Chris Blackwell in the early 1990s. The Marlin was completely redesigned by noted UK designer, Barbara Hulanicki who now lives in Miami and operates her own design firm, Barbara Hulanicki Design.

The Marlin contains its own on-site recording studio which has been used by Aerosmith, U2, Nine Inch Nails, and many others.

Hi, Joseph, is this one of those press release posts I’ve heard about? Just kidding.

In addition to the bands you mentioned, BeyoncĂ©, Avril Lavigne, No Doubt, Grace Jones and Robert Palmer have also recorded at the Marlin’s VIP recording studio.

Last I heard, Elite Modeling Agency is also located at the hotel.

    Ah-ha-ha…Gus made a funny…

Nope, not a press release post. And it turns out that not everyone is clear on the concept behind a “fact sheet” either. (G)

Thanks for the Marlin info. I saw that place once around 1986 before it went through its first renovation and you wouldn’t believe what a disaster it was. After that it got a very minor make-over (I think they just painted it) and it sat for a long time before Chris B. bought it.

I think it’s one of most photogenic hotels in South Beach.
