Miami: Mediterranean Splendor & Deco Dreams by Beth Dunlop

miami.gifIn Miami: Mediterranean Splendor and Deco Dreams, author Beth Dunlop provides the definitive look at Miami’s fabled architecture in its historical, social, and cultural contexts. Ranging from Art Deco hotels to mid-century modernist homes, Mediterranean villas and avant-garde high-rises, these buildings allure, delight, and engage the imagination. Miami’s identity is a self-invented construct; each element that makes the city so unique today was designed to portray a perceived cultural heritage, masque the natural conditions of the landscape, and emulate a luxurious lifestyle that was merely a dream before it became a reality.

This book covers well-known masterpieces, such as the exquisite Villa Vizacaya on Biscayne Bay, as well as those that are often overlooked and features spectacular color photography that complements the archival imagery. Miami: Mediterranean Splendor and Deco Dreams is an architectural biography of a city that continues to be a work in progress.

Beth Dunlop is the author of numerous books, including Arquitectonica. She is editor-in-chief of HOME Miami magazine and an AIA award-winning architecture critic for The Miami Herald. She is also a regular contributor to House & Garden and Metropolitan Home. She lives in Miami Beach.

Steven Brooke is a fellow of the American Academy in Rome and winner of the A.I.A. National Institute Honor Award for photography. He is the author and photographer of Rizzoli’s Views of Rome and Views of Jerusalem and the Holy Land and photographer of Seaside Style.
