New York Times Touches BASE in Miami Beach
At the end of every year, trend-driven New Yorkers make their annual pilgrimage to South Beach wearing outrageously priced designer jeans, name dropping imported sneakers and ironically nerdy eyewear in an effort to mimic the studied indifference that distinguishes members of the Art World that is BASEL.
We imagine well-heeled financial types dispatching their harried assistants to the big money Manhattan and Williamsburg boutiques in search of just the right shades of midnight indigo and matte black that will help them permeate the air with the allure of indifference as they sip pricey cocktails in the lobby at the Sagamore.
Creating a BASEL-worthy wardrobe is an art form as rarefied as the post postmodernist artwork. We can’t help but smile imagining the thousands of dollars and hours of serious contemplation invested in the silly ritual we call Basel-Faux-Bo-Ho. The Sunday New York Times finally discovered Steven Giles innovative BASE boutique on Lincoln Road this weekend and praised it’s “studiedly subversive ambience.” While the cleverly curated collection Giles oversees has always enchanted savvy South Beach shoppers, we were genuinely happy to read the NYT praise one of our favorite ex-pat cool hounds.
