Sunday in Miami Beach: 12 hours Poolside

poolside-200.jpgSometimes you travel with a Donald Trump-sized budget and sometimes you don’t. There are hotel rooms in town that will set you back a thousand dollars a night and also a few that offer change for a hundred. What’s usually missing from these smaller properties is a proper pool patio to stretch out on and work on your South Beach Tan. While you can try to pass for a big spender and sneak into a fancy resort, it just might be easier to do what locals do and attend the Sunday sessions at popular pool decks all around the city. If you have 12 hours and a large tube of sunscreen, we’re here to help you stay cool at the pool.

The newest pool party on Sundays starts at noon at the South Seas Hotel where a DJ spins while you splash and tan. While most folks are still recovering from a long Saturday night, energetic sun worshippers are sipping $7 “Hair of the Dog” cocktails and washing away their hangovers with bouncing beach balls and bikini clad babes in the tropical beachfront hammock grove. The South Seas invites you to chill under the swaying palms til 6pm.

The Sunday Soiree gets going late at the Raleigh Hotel pool deck. By day, retro movie buffs will revel in the nostalgia that the Raleigh swimming pool was originally built for MGM’s aquatic movie goddess Esther Williams. Andre Balazs restored the pool with a loving hand; taking six months to find the right colors to paint around the curvaceous edge and sourcing the perfect swim rings for guests to float along in peaceful bliss. If you want to swim and tan, have lunch poolside and then find a quiet lounge to test your SPF. Slip into something sexy after dark because the party lasts as long as you can…

The Raleigh has a sister who lives across town … a sister hotel, actually. The Standard Hotel on the quiet edge of the Venetian Islands has a retro vibe and one of the most popular pool parties for day-trippers and registered guests alike. With a casual “do it yourself” approach to spa treatments and a co-ed Hammam steam bath, the spa attracts hipsters and health nuts seeking a quiet bayside escape. Relax at the edge of the infinity pool and you’re likely to see dolphins popping up just off shore.

Sundays at the Spa, enjoy “Love Life,” an evening of loungey music, cocktails by the Bay, bingo, movies, yoga and unlimited spa access. The games start at 6pm, movies at 8 and parking is just $4.
