Just a Soldier in the Miami Beach Martini Wars!
Last week we mentioned some of the changes the Tides Hotel (1220 Ocean Drive) made during their extensive renovation, but one thing the Kor Hotel Group didn’t change was our favorite signature cocktail - The Tide’s Tropical Popsicle Martini! The cocktail lounge at the Tides has always provided a swank respite from the daily grind and South Beach Cognoscenti often gather at this Art Deco landmark to enjoy jazz era music and sip frozen popsicle-topped martinis on sultry summer nights.
Newcomers to the Scene are also gathering at Wish at the Hotel (801 Collins Ave) where the Spire Rooftop Lounge offers a panoramic view of the South Beach Skyline.
While the Tides pops a popsicle into their martinis, the bartenders at Spire have taken a bit of upscale technology from www.wowcoolstuff.com and introduced the Electronic Martini to the Miami Beach Martini Wars. Dedicated bar crawlers are making the trek south to sample the lightcube-illuminated martinis that vie for prominence with the skyline lights of the city. Lightcubes are tiny, FDA-approved plastic ice cubes filled with a re-freezable gel and a battery-operated light bulb that illuminates your drink.
While the twinkling cubes do nothing to enhance the taste of the cocktail, bartenders will mix up a custom concoction inspired by the color of the tiny cube. For example, blue lightcubes can light up a Stoli Blueberry Martini that’s muddled with fresh berries and ginger. Electronic Martinis are $15 including one take-home electronic ice cube. If you want to throw your own Electronic Martini party, you can buy the cubes online at www.wowcoolstuff.com for about $2 each.
Fashion, function, and fun! Now THAT’S refreshing!
