The
super team of Myles Chefetz and Executive Chef Michael Schwartz
added Shoji Sushi to the team's highly successful
restaurants, Prime 112, Prime Italian and Big Pink,
all on the same
city block.
Opened in March 2001, Shoji Sushi
is the still point where East meets West. By incorporating Japanese and
North American sensibilities throughout its décor, tableware and
presentation, Shoji Sushi is a serene yet au courant environment. The
coupling of authentic Japanese cuisine with outstanding service yields a
Zen-like experience for the palate and the senses.
Shoji Sushi features South Beach's
first table height sushi bar allowing customers to have an unobstructed view
of the sushi chefs at work. Chefetz and Schwartz have carefully studied the
Japanese Zen mentality—clean, fast, organized and quiet—and bring this
to the table in a warm sophisticated setting.
The comprehensive menu includes
soups (Miso, Oyster Miso and Spicy Seafood), salads (3 Radish, Wakame, Fresh
Hearts of Palm and more) and a wide selection of appetizers including
Yakitori, Sake Steamed Mussels, Tuna and Salmon Tartare and Shin's Crispy
Noodles, among many other choices. The menu continues with a selection of
Tempura, Ceviche (the sampler includes a 1/2 order of each selection), and a
variety of steamed or char grilled entrées served with steamed vegetables,
white or brown rice and dipping sauces. Sushi and Sashimi are available by
the piece (2 pieces in each order) or by the platter. Hand rolls and inside
out or cut rolls are also on the menu.
Desserts are $5 each and include Green Tea Cheesecake,
Homemade Ginger Ale Float, Warm Chocolate Cake with Coconut and Passion Fruit Coulis and
Homemade Ice Cream and Sorbets.
Shoji Sushi offers cold sake on
tap, flights of cold sake and the more traditional hot sake served in
Japanese-style sake cups. In addition to the sake bar, there is a thorough,
yet eclectic wine list and full bar. Specialty drinks include Gingertinis,
Sakatinis, and Espressotinis.
The beautifully designed dining
room seats 50 and the sushi bar seats 15—best seats in the house for
viewing the Japanese animation, Godzilla flicks and Sumo wrestling aired on
the video monitors. For those who want an intimate corner the Jellyfish
Lounge seats 16 and the outdoor garden seats 50. The Sake Bar (seating five)
is perfect for those dining solo or just stopping by for Sake on tap.

Review: Eat
outside only -inside is too noisy. Makes Japanese food a dining
experience, not just a quick meal. Food quality is superb and creative
and the Latin influence in the seviches make them amazing. Best
Japanese dining experience in Miami area. Ambiance is excellent but
only if you dine outside. |

Review: Shoji
is the unsung hero of sushi restaurants in South Beach. It is owned by
the same team that runs Prime 112, Nemo, and Big Pink, so you know it's
gonna be good! Top quality selection of sushi as well as some excellent
appetizers and entrees. The sea bass and black cod are just as good as
Nobu at half the price. |
